Description
In the summer of 1977 Chaplain John M. Pope (my brother) went to Japan with a 446th MAW crew. His room-mate at Yokoto AFB, Japan was artist Larry Kangas, the crew navigator. As John and Larry enjoyed the countryside together, Larry told John he was going to paint a mural depicting the work of the Wing, as it transports equipment and men to points throughout the world.
Shortly after John's August 26th marriage and the appointment of Pope John Paul, the mural was unveiled in October or November 1978. It is 11 feet by 15 feet and takes up an entire wall in the entryway of the 446th operations building at McChord AFB.
Chaplain Pope is depicted in papal garb - complete with halo over his head. The halo also serves as a ripple mark for the watery portion above his head in the mural.
